Dogpile Search Engine

The dogpile? http://www.dogpile.com/add2home.html

This web site offers a multitude of services. Most relevant to our research is its search engine capabilities. From WWW. dogpile.com you can type in keywords and begin a search through a total of 13 different Web search engines. The following are included-Yahoo!,Lycos'A2Z, Excite Guide, GoTo.com, Planetsearch,Thunderstone, What U Seek, Magellan, Lycos, WebCrawler, Infoseek, Excite & AltaVista. Your results are then listed under each individual search engine so you can tell where they came from. Usenet is also in there including Reference, Dejanews, AltaVista and Dejanews old Database. FTP searches can be done through Filez and FAST FTP Search.

Dogpile starts its search with Yahoo which they claim is the most focused and then moves on to the other search engines. According to the web page "100hotsites" the Dogpile ranked #46 and Yahoo is ranked #1. I found it amazing that I could search so many engines at once. There is also assistance with syntax, so you can be more specific with your search.

Should you have questions there is a link to "webmaster@dogpile.com" to send email directly to the Dogpile without leaving the window. I was unable to determine if the Dogpile was its own entity or produced by a parent company. I also couldn't access a date of origin so I sent an email for more information which has yet to be answered. I'll send it along when I get an answer.

In addition to search capabilities one can access weather information, stock quotes, business news and other news wires including Yahoo News Headlines, Excite News and Infoseek News Wires. Links exist to Amazon.com (discounted books), Hotmail, Electric library and if desperate Cigar.com. You can also link to "comparnet" to compare products and make Internet purchases.

Instructions on how to add a Dogpile remote link to your own Homepage are listed on the Dogpile homepage. Beware, however, you could spend a lot of time there which is most of what I seem to be doing lately. Not having much experience on the Web I found the Dogpile very helpful. I certainly learned a lot about surfing the Web, as they made it easy. The search is free unless you order a custom search, which was $35.00 from one window.
